Learning as We Go

April is a busy month for our staff and students in Kenya. It’s the end of the first academic term, and the beginning of a one month school holiday That means alot of time spent coordinating the movements of our sixty three students from their schools to their home villages. Second and third year students are given bus fare and have received instructions on taking public transportation, which is a common practice for school children in Kenya. First year AKIN students are escorted home by staff in our organization’s vehicle.

ACADEMIC CAMPS

In this newsletter you will read about the academic camp we held last month. It was a three day program that was organized in response to the need many of our students have for extra academic tutoring in order to improve their performance in school. After studying school reports over the past two years, we have concluded that many of our students suffer from poor primary school educations . Therefore, they are lacking in basic math and English skills. These academic camps, led by teachers from outstanding private Nairobi schools, will attempt to address these deficiencies. We intend to conduct these camps three times a year, and continually monitor their effectiveness.

MEET THE STAFF

You will also meet Zipporah Muthoni who is our office manager in Nairobi. She is a charming young lady with an interesting story that she was willing to share.

NEW SUPPORTERS AND GOOD FRIENDS

Finally,I am pleased to announce a significant gift from the Harvey World Travel Agency in Australia which has agreed to sponsor five AKIN students for the next four years. I want to publicly thank Harvey Travel , and also acknowledge the kindness of Eleanor and Glenn Padnick who made a very generous donation after watching our brand new AKIN video on YouTube. Which reminds me, if you haven’t already seen our videos, the link is listed below. Please take ten minutes and see where your own donations are going. I think you will be impressed. Thank you all for your continued support.
