A Message From Walter Ong'ala

Happy New Year from Project Manager of the A.K.I.N. Learning Center. Walter Ong'ala.

Word from the Project Manager

Happy New Year! The year 2010 has begun with  a new project that  will add a lot of value to the AKIN program, the AKIN Learning Center. This project will not only change the face of the organization but it will also bring smiles to the faces of ten students who will have an opportunity participate in our home school program. This concept, though still new in Kenya is learner friendly compared to what our students have experienced  in their early educations.

The AKIN Learning Center will help our students who come from vulnerable backgrounds, often total orphans and extreme poverty, have a better chance to succeed. Because they have attended poor primary schools that lack facilities and  adequate teachers to help them prepare for secondary school, these children  often struggle when they reach the higher grades and many drop out. This project is a bid to provide a solution to this problem by providing a year long intense remedial curriculum taught by two full time teachers. In addition, the home-schooling program will expose our students to cultures from other areas within Kenya and other parts of the world. Through internet exchange programs, our students will have access to students in classrooms around the world.

The AKIN Learning Center  will also offer instruction in  practical  skills like typing, using the computer, internet and foreign languages which will expose them to a myriad of opportunities in the future. They will learn   positive values and leadership skills which will  raise  their self esteem.

As I conclude, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the partners of AKIN who have tirelessly and endlessly supported this noble task which started at a humble beginning and is now growing into a big family. Partnering with AKIN is a worthwhile investment. Providing an opportunity for a needy child to acquire  a quality education will go a long way in lifting our country and eventually the  entire African continent.
