Helping Beyond Graduation

At the end of  November of 2010, A.K.I.N graduated its first class of four year secondary students. Final exam results or KCSE (Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education) determine whether a graduating student is given the opportunity to attend public universities. If a student qualifies, tuition is paid by the Kenyan government, and the student only needs to provide for their living expenses and books. Other students who receive lower scores on the standardized test can still go to college, but they must raise the money for tuition as well as expenses. Loans are available, but they must eventually be repaid. Test results are not available until February of the year following the end of the school year in which a student graduates,  and even students who achieve a successful score must wait to enter university until the following year. The months between graduation and the start of college are spent looking for ways to earn money, and in a country with 30 per cent unemployment that is a challenge. Our counselors at A.K.I.N. are helping these students meet this challenge.

Of our 2010 graduating class of ten secondary students, two girls have been accepted into universities. We are helping them with expenses until government funds are available.

We are in touch with all the graduates from the Class of 2010 as well as the Class of 2011, and we are counseling them as they transition into higher education or employment. One of our major goals for this year is to see that the investment we made in these children by helping them get an education will be lead them to the productive lives they deserve.
